 The main goal of this proposal is to establish an inter-disciplinary center of excellence in biotechnology. The center will cover applications of biotechnology in food and agriculture, medicine and pharmaceutical as well as basic science. This proposal will also stress on the potential impact of establishing such a center as a regional center of excellence. This impact may be achieved by integration of research, education and training.
Concerning research, the center will focus on solving problems that contribute in the economy and sustainable development in Saudi Arabia. For example in the field of agriculture biotechnology, work will be conducted to produce drought and salt tolerant plants, animal disease diagnosis and as well as the application of molecular markers in plant and animal breeding. In medicine, the center will focus on genomic research and genetic and microbial disease diagnosis. In pharmacy, the center will be using biotechnology tools for the production of new drugs as well as designing a novel drug delivery systems to maximize the efficacy and reduce the toxicity.
The center will also establish partnership with private sectors as well as government organization achieving the goal of knowledge based economy. In addition, the centers will achieve the above by establishing collaboration with internationally recognized center of excellence in biotechnology.
