The main responsibility of IPP is to protect the intellectual property of KSU by obtaining patents and by licensing technologies of high economic value according to the following general process:
· IPP will receive patent disclosures from KSU personnel.
· The program management will evaluate the disclosures and determine whether they are likely to be awarded patents by conducting a comprehensive survey of similar technologies and patents.
· If IPP finds that the invention is patentable, it will cover all administrative and legal expenses necessary to register the patent at appropriate countries.
· In the mean time, IPP will study the possibility of licensing the technology included in the patent such that if the invention has a high commercial value, IPP will create and manage a licensing and marketing strategy that takes into account technological and marketing risks. The strategy will include searching for corporations that may have interest and whose business is related to the technology. The program management will also search and establish contacts with individuals within companies who are willing to champion the technology and market it.
· IPP will license the technology if possible. The royalties will become a source of funding for scientific research at the department in which the inventor works and for activities of the college in which the department is located. The inventor will personally receive a major part of the royalties as explained later.
Some of the other IPP responsibilities are:
· To increase awareness of KSU personnel regarding the benefits of filing for patents and licensing of technologies. IPP will conduct workshops and seminars explaining the advantages of these processes and the steps they need to take to initiate them.
· To actively communicate with KSU personnel in specific and the public at large through publishing newsletters highlighting the achievements of the program and its responsibilities. The program management will also arrange for visits to local schools and institutions to explain the importance of innovation and creativity. Workshops specifically designed for children will also be conducted regularly to instill in our future generations the passion for science and innovation.
