The university sector works toward performing functions that activate intellectual productivity and supports development in the society, in addition to giving the university a pioneering knowledge role both at the local level and at the international level. These functions include the following:
· Establishing research and development programs such as: centers of excellence, research chairs, and technology parks and incubators;
· Cooperation, both locally and internationally with distinguished research organizations and individuals including those who won the Nobel prize.
· Cooperation with capable organizations and individuals and enable them to contribute to supporting research and making use of its deliverables;
· Initiating programs, such as holding seminars and conferences and publishing printed and electronic materials, to enhance drive toward knowledge generation and sustainable development; through the integration with the related university departments.
· Supporting information technology tools to support the above functions and increase their efficiency and effectiveness, including making the university an intelligent area that enables everyone to communicate instantly with the world at large; and
· Responding effectively to change, and supporting the pioneering knowledge role of the university.
