King Saud University and the Ministry of Water and Electricity

 

 Sign a Contract for the Examination of Dams

 

 

 

His Excellency the King Saud University Rector, Abdullah Ibn Abdurrahman Al Othman, signed with His Excellency the Minister of Water and Electricity, Engineer Abdullah Ibn Abdurrahman a contract for the study and evaluation of dams in terms of devising safe operational programs for them.  

 

The project will be carried out by King Abdullah’s Institute for Research and Consultatory Studies and shall consist in the examination of the condition of the Kingdom’s 230 dams; their effects and importance, and the setting up of adequate programs to operate them in order to meet the objectives for which they were built.

 

The study will include the estimation of the storage capacity of the dams, their geological, geophysical, hydrological and constructional conditions, as well as their environmental and social effects on neighboring communities throughout the Kingdom.

 

The study shall feature the application of field measurements, remote sensing and geographical data systems to work out efficient and adequate operational programs for these dams.  It will take 30 months and will include several regions such as Riyadh, Al Qasseem, Mekkah, Medina, Hayel, Al Jouf, the Northern Borders, Tabuk, Asseer, Jazan and Najran.
