Caricatures, Disabilities in a Workshop

The Saudi Association for Media and Communication and Disabilities Service Center co-held a workshop on caricature and disabilities under the auspices of H.E. Professor Dr. Abdullah Al-Uthman, the KSU president.

Addressed by a pool of mass communication department, foremost was Dr. Ali AlKarni, the editor-in-chief of Resalah newspaper, who said that most of Arab drawings made a connection between a disability and failure. He explained that semiology was the study of sign processes (semiosis), or signification and communication, signs and symbols, both individually and grouped into sign systems. He has explained that a finger, an eye, or a wheelchair are signs used by caricaturists to refer to the disabled people.

Dr. Sahar Al-Khashramy, an associate professor of special education, presented a paper on types of disabilities. She said that mass media were the most effective way for affecting on people noting that disability was largely uncovered in mass media. She called for providing caricaturists with guides to use proper signs for disabilities to avert using improper terms that hurt them.
