On-Campus Symptoms

By Dr. Ali Al-Karni
A professor voiced remorse over the bygone days, on which life went easier. He was used to lecture for 10-14 hours a week with no administrative burdens. But, as of the beginning of this year things have turned upside down thanks to Professor Dr. Abdullah Al-Uthman, KSU rector.
The professor does his utmost to achieve the minimum of his administrative, researching and academic responsibilities. Yet, he does not feel success since he does not go home back earlier as before. Rather, he, sometimes, stays on campus for more than 10 hours a day and continues working at home in the evening, on weekends, and sometimes on holidays.
Things have gone worse when some wives, who are female faculty members, suffer from the same on-campus symptoms. In the past, they were used to go home earlier at noon, had two days off, in addition to the weekends. Now, they go home late at four or five o’clock with some assignments.
I enjoyed listening to my colleague because this hustle and bustle on campus is a real portent to positive shifts not only at the level of university programs and plans but also at the level of thought and individual demeanors.
