ARCH 603 Statistical Methods in Architecture       _     3 (2+2)

Statistical methods, their principles and field of application on research issues in architecture and urban design. Emphasis on descriptive statistics incorporating statistical concepts and deduction methods. Techniques of graphical analysis in statistical methods and review of analysis in previously published research. Undertaking selected applied studies on data analysis and use of statistical methods so as to reinforce the student’s ability to asses research work.  

ARCH 621 The Concept of Theory in Architecture-1          3 (3+0)

The concept of architectural theory and the context of its formulation and development as regards to its origins, its development into maturity and application, and further its subsequent critique and reasons for its demise.  The course includes the following:  The concept of theory and the philosophy of science and art, the concept of theory in Islamic and Western cultures, the context of theory formulation, applied case studies of selected past and contemporary architectural theories, and preparation of one critical case study within one of the relevant topics.

ARCH 622 Contemporary Architectural Thought-2     _     3 (3+0)

The Relationship between Saudi development plans and the debate on architecture and urbanism in contemporary Saudi society.  Consolidating the knowledge about contemporary concepts, theories and schools of thought in architecture at local, regional and international levels. Training on methods of critical investigation of contemporary thought to deduce directions for future movements of architecture.

ARCH 631 Environment and Human Behavior-1          __    3 (3+0)

The relationship between Man and the built environment.  Review of various theories and schools of thought in the field of human behavior and related research issues. Implications of the built environment on peoples behavior, attitudes, preferences and levels of satisfactions and the use of surrounding environment and its improvisation.  Consideration of cognition of the built environment and evaluation of environments and direct and indirect implications on individual and group behavior.

ARCH 632 Environment and Human Behavior-2           _    3 (3+0)

In-depth of the interaction of people with the built environment with respect to physical, behavioral, psychological, social and cultural aspects. Transformation of these aspects into design controlling mechanism of the environmental forms. Making of strategies and policies for architectural and urban design. Development of knowledge on specific issues in human behavior in the built environment. This includes the ability to select the appropriate research strategies and techniques for measuring performance of the built environment.

ARCH 641 Facility Planning-1                                    __    3 (3+0)

Review of planning theories in facility planning.  Analysis of architectural and urban implications on specific examples of facilities.  Undertaking planning and design treatment of one specific example, either actual or selected for research, and investigation of the impact of architectural and urban factors on its design, as well as proposing the administrative structure of its spatial content.  The consideration of the various overall factors and effects on the facility, which includes programming resources including  human, economic, spatial and environmental indicators. 

ARCH 642 Facility Planning-2                                     __     3 (3+0)

Analysis of a selected facility through real architectural program.  Presentation of research data and drawings illustrating the analysis and implementation of the planning and design principles for the selected facility. This includes the underlying planning concepts, principles and components, as well as the proposed urban adaptability of the facility or proposed example. Then study the most appropriate functional and technical programs and the human, economic spatial and environmental factors affecting its planning and design.

ARCH 651 Advanced Architectural Project Management-1     3 (3+0)

Review of the concept of management in general and project management in particular: planning and organization, directives and control, their use in the management of material and man power.  The role of leadership and motivation skills in the utilization of resources. Project planning and documentation. Examination of the various advanced techniques and scientific methods used in project management planning, scheduling and management of human and material resources allocation.

ARCH 652 Advanced Architectural Project Management-2    _ 3 (3+0)

Specialized topics in project management, such as: site management and safety of execution, feasibility study and construction economics, value engineering, management of operations and maintenance projects, both preventive and treatment types. Delineating the difference between construction projects and maintenance projects as regards to nature of works, dealing with time and the nature of resources used.

ARCH 661 Advanced Building Technology-1            __     3 (3+0)

Historical review of development of building technology and its impact on architecture and comparative studies of traditional and contemporary building systems and technology in the Kingdom. Advanced construction technology and its adaptability to prevailing economic and social conditions.  The development of the manufacturing industry of building materials and components of structural systems.  Advanced techniques of operation and maintenance.

ARCH 662 Advanced Building Technology-2                           3 (3+0)

Impact of advanced building technology on architectural thought, the social and urban environment and the economics of the building industry in the Kingdom. Advanced building systems and technology, social and economic rewards of the development of the technology of building industry, the impacts of advanced building technology on architectural form.

ARCH 671 Advanced Computer Applications in Architecture-1   3(3+0)

Review of history and theories of computer applications in the field of architecture. The role and impact of computer applications on architectural education and professional practice. The concept of digital architecture and its applications.

ARCH 672 Advanced Computer Applications in Architecture-1  3(3+0)

Procedures of knowledge simulation, mechanization of the creative stages of design.  Educational Systems of learning by example and recent developments and advanced computer applications in the field of architecture. Virtual reality applications and uses in architecture.

ARCH 690 Architecture Seminar                             _ 3(3+0)

In-depth knowledge in one of the fields of specialization in architecture through undertaking specific research studies, with a view to selecting major and minor areas of specialization options offered by the program. These are as follows: Theory and History of Architecture, Environment and Behavioral Studies, Facility Planning, Project Management, Building Technology, and Computer Applications in Architecture. The student selects a major and a minor area, in the form of a research proposal to decide his specialization.

ARCH 691 Selected Topics in Architectural Research    _    3(3+0)

In-depth knowledge and research skills in the field of specialization; studies, analysis and conclusions formulation. Discussion of different aspects of major issues in architecture and building technology with particular attention to potential areas for research application. Review of recent literature in this field and various advanced research studies.  Review of advanced research methods in the field of specialization.

ARCH 692 Special Studies                                         _2 (2+0)

Specialized advanced studies in of one of the following architectural fields: Theory and History of Architecture, Environment and Behavior Studies, Facility Planning and Design, Project Management, Building Technology, and Computer Applications in Architecture. Student should register with a faculty member according to field of specialization.

 ARCH 700 Ph.D. Dissertation

Write and present a doctoral dissertation, required to be an original contribution to the area of study.
