About Us:
Historically speaking, the establishment of the Department of Arabic Language has been in full concurrence with the establishment of King Saud University in 1377 H. One of the major targets behind establishing this department was to help preserve the Arabic language (and its traditions) being the language of the Holy Quran. Like all other departments, the Department of Arabic language has developed over the years and broadened the scope of its offerings to include the teaching of Arabic Syntax, Morphology, Rhetoric, Criticism, and Literature. For some period of time, the Department of Arabic Language was also offering the teaching of Islamic languages as well as the Semitic ones like Turkish, Persian, and Hebrew; but the teaching of such languages is currently offered by the College of Languages and Translation which was established a little later.
The Department of Arabic Language is actually one of the College of Arts’ largest departments in terms of the number of faculty, lecturers, and teaching assistants. Currently, the department is offering three specialist study tracks: Syntax, Literature, and Criticism. The department is accordingly awarding the three following academic degrees:
BA in Arabic Language and Literature
MA in Arabic Language and Literature
Ph.D. in Arabic Language and Literature
In an effort to enrich the quality of study for its students, the Department of Arabic Language has established a folkloric museum that concerns with collecting antique samples that represent the various sides of Saudi life, in general, while focusing on samples that exhibit the process of change that the Saudi society is going through. Being a place of visit for all students in general and the students of Arabic Department in particular, the museum provides everybody with the great chance of watching the distinct panoramic features of local Saudi life in past times and the present.
