The National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) is one of the oldest scientific institutions in the region. It was founded in Boulac-Cairo in 1839 as an Astronomical Observatory. In 1865, it was transferred to Abbassia - Cairo. Finally, it was moved to its current location at Helwan in 1903. From that time up till now and along this time span of more than century NRIAG has witnessed large developments and expansion phases in several disciplines such as Astronomy, Space research, Solar Research, Seismology, Geomagnetism, Geoelectric, Geothermal, Gravimetry, Geodesy, Geodynamics, and recently Crustal Movements. Nowadays NRIAG plays an important application role in the national development plan of Egypt. More details about NRIAG can be found at: www.nriag.sci.eg
Objectives:
The Arab conference on Astronomy and geophysics will be organized bi-annually. The name of the conference is made so that it can be organized under the umbrella of the League of Arab States and can be held only in one of the Arab countries. However, participation is open for astronomers and geophysicists from Arab countries as well as any other part of the globe. Among many other objectives of the conference, the main objectives are:
1- To foster, deepen and strengthen the relation among astronomers and geophysicists in Arab world through joint research work, joint research projects, exchange of learned lessons, conducting training courses, workshops and creating network for on-line data exchange on natural phenomenon.
2- To encourage Arab scientists in both fields to integrating their efforts in contributing to the advancement and progress of astronomy and geophysics through active cooperation among each others as well as other scientists from any other part of the world.
Topics of the Conference:
A- Astronomy:
Ø Galactic and Extra Galactic Astronomy: galaxies, nebula, AGN, quasars, star clusters, invisible astronomy, and light pollution.
Ø Stellar and Theoretical Astronomy: variable stars, solar system, celestial mechanics, cosmology, relativity, and model atmosphere.
Ø Solar Research: solar physics, solar radiation, pollution, solar energy; computational, islamic and archaeological astronomy.
Ø Space Sciences: orbital mechanics, attitude dynamics and control, aerospace engineering, SLR, space environment, and space geodesy, etc….
B- Geophysics:
Ø Seismology: seismotectonics, engineering seismology, seismic hazards, seismic tomography, seismic methods, and volcanology.
Ø Seismologic networks and online data exchange.
Ø Potential geophysics: gravity, magnetic, geoelectric, geoelectromagnetism, environmental and archaeological geophysics, and groundwater.
Ø Geodesy: crustal deformation, GPS for geodynamics and remote sensing.
