 Introduction:

     The physical sciences have been progressed extensively in the past years. A breakthrough was recorded in the last century (quantum mechanics, materials properties and others). Today, physics could be seen in all directions of our life, e.g. education, medical, engineering, agriculture, security, environment etc. The development of physics was also associated with the growing of educational systems at all levels as from primary to secondary and university levels, and this helped to establish the necessity of a continuous development of higher studies in physics in the world. 

    Postgraduate studies are considered as the initial step for research development, and also could be one of the main resources for helping the Saudi society. Indeed, this will contribute in the enhancement of knowledge and also producing a strong islamic nation. Accordingly the postgraduate studies need to be developed between time to time in order to keep research and development R, D as an updated issue, and at least every two decades such postgraduate studies should modified. 

     The present program is devoted to modernize the Master of Science in Physics(M. Sc) degree at the department of physics & astronomy in five specialized areas and this was done by modifying the old courses and introducing new courses. The main areas/paths in the M. Sc program are the theoretical physics, nuclear physics, materials physics, laser physics and solar energy.   

Degree Name:   Master of Science in Physics (M. Sc) by course and a thesis

Program Objectives:

1. To provide man powers in physics in the field of academic and scientific research.
2. To contribute in the kingdom's needs of specialists in the area of applied physics
3. To promote the student level for carrying Ph. D program in the area of R, D in Physics.

Admission Requirements:

1. The admission requirements enumerated in the 15^th article of the unified law organizing the graduate studies in Saudi universities.
2. Candidates should hold a bachelors degree (B. Sc) in Physics from universities and teachers' colleges in Saudi Arabia or its equivalent.
3. Candidates must pass the departmental requirements (50 marks) and a written test in Physics (English) for final admission (50 marks).

Degree Requirements:

• Successful completion of a 24 credit hours of graduate courses distributes as follows:
1. 8 credit hours: basic courses in physics of the first term of the master program.
2. 16 credit hours: core courses for the second and third terms (compulsory or elective) related to the program track.
• Completing a successful thesis.
