Graduation Project Procedures

Reaching the phase of final graduation projects is a big event for any student. The department acknowledges the importance of it and therefore puts great effort in the process of assigning, supervising, and evaluating the graduation projects. It has therefore appointed a project committee consisting of all supervisors, and headed by one of them.

Due to the large number of students graduating each semester it is not feasible to have the students select their supervisors directly. Therefore, the department follows the following procedure in assigning projects:

  1. Each faculty member proposes 1 or 2 topics depending on the number of projects required in each semester.
  2. Students may suggest topics.
  3. All topics are discussed by the project committee to be approved and then announced to the students.
  4. The students form groups of 4-8 students depending on the number of graduating students and the available faculty members to supervise them.
  5. Students select the projects they like and submit them in order of their preference to the head of the project committee.
  6. The head of the project committee assigns the student groups to the project mainly depending on their preferences.
  7. Examination committees consisting of 3 members other than the supervisor are assigned to each project.

The above tasks are usually accomplished within the first week of the semester since preparation for it occurs at the end of the previous semester. The students will then start meeting with their supervisors on a weekly basis over a period of two semesters.

During the first semester (496 CAP – Project 1) the students are required to submit a detailed proposal. This is preferably done by the 6th week of the semester when it is submitted to the project committee for approval of the scope. The students also have to complete the analysis phase, submit a report, and do a presentation of their work at the end of the semester. The presentation and report will be evaluated by the examination committee who will assign a grade to the project as a whole. That grade will account to 40% of the total grade while the other 60% are given to the students by their supervisor based on their contributions to the project throughout the semester.

During the second semester (497 CAP- Project 2) the students will continue the project design, implementation, and testing phases. A complete report is submitted to the examination committee several days before a presentation and demonstration of the project is conducted in front of the committee. Similar to the first phase, the examiners grade the project as a whole and their grade will account to 40% of the total score while the other 60% are given to the students by their supervisor based on their contributions to the project throughout the semester.

All presentations are open to all students and a limited number of outside visitors – usually the project students’ family and friends
