GENERAL OBJECTIVES

The principal goal of the program is to provide the graduate students an integrated knowledge of advanced didactic and clinical instructions and to develop their skills in all phases of prosthodontics.

The program will help them to develop the comprehensive care of most complex rehabilitative conditions for the patients with prosthodontic needs. Student will be emphasized to recognize their limitations in clinical procedure and to develop the referred skills.

The program is composed of equal in-depth distribution of both fixed and removal prosthodontics. The implants dentistry will be integrated in addition to student’s exposure to maxillofacial prosthesis.

Moreover, the program is aimed at developing an advanced and critical approach to diagnosis and treatment of occlusal problems, and temporomandibular disorders. Applied basic sciences in relation to biomedical specialties, e.g., biostatistics and principles of epidemiology will be an integral part of the program, to enhance the clinical and global horizon of the discipline of prosthodontics.

CLINICAL ACTIVITY

The clinical curriculum of the program has been designed to simulate a group practice environment. Each student is provided with a fully equipped operatory throughout his program period.

The clinical activity is within the Graduate Prosthodontic Clinic. There is a laboratory with work storage space assigned to each student. Cleanliness of the Prosthetic Postgraduate Laboratory is the responsibility of the students.  Each semester, based on a rota basis, a postgraduate student will be responsible for maintaining the organization and cleanliness of the laboratory.

The student is assigned patients selected by the Program Director or any member in the postgraduate committee supervising in the clinic to give increasingly more challenging treatment concepts. Also, specific treatment problems are assigned to demonstrate a particular concept. During the program period, the student may be assigned specific teaching responsibilities with the department undergraduate program in the College of Dentistry.

The clinical-support-personnel include assistants whose duties replicate those of their counterparts in private practice. Patient seating and dismissal, chairside assisting, taking radiographs and patients scheduling are some of the duties performed by the assistants.

INTERDEPARTMENTAL RELATIONSHIPS

There is a close liaison between the clinical department in the College of Dentistry. All students must participate in interdisciplinary consultation and/or patient management. Particularly close relations exist among the various advanced education programs. A request for consultation should never be rejected.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

An extensive range of continuing education courses are available through the Saudi Dental Society, government and private sectors. Students are encouraged to attend those primarily related to fixed, removable, operative dentistry and dental implants.
