The College of Dentistry is an integral part of the collegiate system of King Saud University which began operation in 1377-1378 H. (1957-1958).  An essential service to the Kingdom was undertaken by the University in 1389-1390 H. (1969-1970) with the establishment of the College of Medicine.  The commencement of dental education six years later in 1395 H. was therefore a logical expansion of the objectives of providing extensive total health care in the Kingdom, as enunciated in the Development Programs of the College at the time.

As the first university-based dental training institution in the Arabian Gulf, the College of Dentistry of King Saud University has succeeded tremendously in the training of male and female dentists who are now providing dental care throughout the Kingdom.  In addition and more importantly, many of these graduates of King Saud University, College of Dentistry are now serving as faculty members in Colleges of Dentistry throughout the Kingdom. A sizeable number are also in successful private practice.  A handful of nationals from neighboring Gulf trained in the College are now serving in their respective countries.

The first group of students enrolled in the College at the beginning of 1396-1397H (1976-1975G) academic year.  In that year, the credit-hour system was introduced whereby students are required to pass a total of 199 credit hours, the equivalent of six academic years followed by a one-year Internship, after which the student receives the Bachelor of Science in Dental Surgery (B.D.S.).
The College of Dentistry started with only seven (7) male graduates the year 1402H, compared to the last academic year 1427-1428H, a hundred male and female students received the diploma of Bachelor of Science in Dental Surgery (B.D.S.).

All achievements and developments by the College will not be attained without the enjoined contributions of the past seven (7) Deans and their administrations who served the College.
