 Overview of PDS Department

 

 

 Synopsis

 

 

The Department of Preventive Dental Sciences is the largest among the college’s departments with over 50 faculty and teaching members covering the various dental specialties allocated under the department. The department’s four divisions represent the four different fields of interest of the department, namely: Orthodontics, Periodontics, Pediatric Dentistry and Community Dentistry. The department provides 10 undergraduate courses to both male and female campuses and participates in teaching of other undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered by the other departments. Currently, the department runs 3 postgraduate Master Degree programs in the specialties of Orthodontics, Periodontics and Pediatric Dentistry with more than 50 graduated students from the department’s postgraduate programs over the past years.

With diversity of specialty fields and backgrounds of faculty, the research interests in the department span a wide range of topics in the areas of specialization.  Proudly, each year, multiple research works from the department are published in the topnotch specialized scientific journals and presented in recognized international scientific meetings. In addition, annual community service and education projects are conducted by the department to fulfill the department’s mission and participate in raising the community’s awareness concerning oral and dental health.

Our mission is to be committed to oral health through excellence and leadership in education, research, and community services.

The department’s vision for the upcoming few years is to be the leading department, both locally and regionally, in the fields of orthodontics, periodontics, pedodontics, and community dentistry.

 

 Objectives

 

 

1.    To conduct continuous self-assessment of existing department’s curricula and pursue steady improvement in the education and training of competent Saudi individuals to be leading professionals in the areas of orthodontics, periodontics, pedodontics, and community dentistry.

 

2.    To support and maintain the excellence in scientific research within the department while endorsing and promoting the essence of the teamwork values among departmental members.

 

3.    To enhance department’s contribution towards oral health in community through: 

 

i.      Increasing oral health awareness among community members

ii.     Providing and enhancing accessibility to different preventive treatment measures

iii.    Conducting comprehensive community oral health surveys for the purpose of evaluation  and recommendation of suitable solutions
