Introduction to Dentistry
(First Half Semester) (1 credit hour) |

The first part of this course is designed to provide the 1st year dental student with an introduction to dentistry by over viewing the concepts, principles and procedures of various specialties in dentistry. The second part of the course will address the behavioral aspects in dentistry, and particular emphasis will be placed on understanding human behavior, patient management and the ethical responsibility inherent within the scope of the dental profession.

Behavioral Dentistry (Second Half Semester) (1 credit hour) |

Behavioral dentistry has been defined as the interdisciplinary field concerned with the development and integration of behavioral and biodental science knowledge and techniques relevant to oral health and disease, and the application of this knowledge and these techniques to prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.
The objective of this course is to examine the key parameters in the science of behavior and to show how and why this science is critical to the successful practice of dentistry. A competent practitioner can be a better professional by augmenting clinical and technical skills with the application of behavioral scientific principles.

Dental Public Health and Community Dentistry (First Half Semester) (4 credit hours) |
|
The first part of this course is designed to provide 5th Year dental student an awareness to the principles and activities of Dental Public Health, in addition to knowledge on the application of sciences of epidemiology and biostatistics in dental public health. The second part of the course will explore the concepts of the dental public health in the light of the oral health problems in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The objective of this course is to explore the concepts of the dental public health in the light of the oral health problems found in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Priority will be placed on practical approaches to program planning, organization and financing of Saudi dental care, practice management and professional ethics. The “clinical” component of the course will focus on the student developing and implementing a community-based oral health project.
