Course Description:

431 PDS

Introduction to Orthodontics                                                                (4 credit hours)

 

Knowledge of the basic of orthodontics is essential for the dental student. This course will provide the undergraduate student with the background of the normal occlusion, malocclusion, growth and development of dento-facial structures, etiology and diagnosis of malocclusion, and the treatment of discrepancies.

The course is an introductory course and consists of lectures and practical parts. The course is conducted through the whole academic year in two semesters.

Clinical Ortohdontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics                                                   (First Half Only)                                                                                      (1 credit hour)

 

The course is given over a period of 15 weeks. In each week, a group of students will participate in seminars, while others will attend a problem-based tutorial sessions. In the seminar, a small group of students will present selected orthodontic topics including:

  • Orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning
  • Orthodontic treatment of patients with medical disorders
  • Early orthodontic treatment
  • Management of anteroposterior skeletal problems
  • Orthodontic treatment for the cleft palate patient
  • Assessment of patients for orthognathic surgery
  • Root resorption during orthodontic therapy
  • Adjunctive orthodontic treatment for adults. 

After the presentation, all attending students will participate in a group discussion of the topic with the supervision of the faculty members. During the tutorial sessions, students will participate in the analysis of given orthodontic cases following the problem-based approach. This method of learning involves an active participation of the students in their learning through generating hypotheses to explain the problems under discussion, contributing resources and knowledge to the group, and demonstrating the ability to understand and apply the available evidence to analyze the case.
