 Department of curriculum and Instruction

 This department was established in the academic year 1394/1395 H. Its main functions are to offer courses in:

a)

Curricula and general methods

b)

Special teaching methods.

c)

Student Teaching

 

The programme of the department includes course at B.A. and graduate levels. It had started the M.A. programme nearly 16 years ago, and it is expected to start its Ph.D. programme a year later.

 

The Objectives of the Department

The department aims at achieving the following objectives:

a)

To provide the student with the main theories dealing with curriculum and instruction.

b)

To provide the student with the main methods of teaching and the opportunity to practice them.

c)

To develop the ability of the student to practice the skills of teaching through the student teaching programme.

 

CI 470  Student Teaching in Chemistry

CI 471  Student Teaching in Physics

CI 472  Student Teaching in Biology

These three courses aim at enabling the student to:

1-

Apply theory into practice what he has learned in teaching methods.

2-

To plan lessons.

3-

Use instructional media.

4-

To prepare classroom tests.

5-

Participate in school activities.

 

Ph.D. programme in Curricula and Methods of Teaching.

The University council had approved the Ph.D. programme of the department. The studies in this programme will start in the following areas:

(a)

Curricula and General Methods.

(b)

Science Education (Curricula and Methods of Teaching)

(c)

Social Studies (Curricula and Methods of Teaching)

 

The studies in the other areas of specialization will take place later on.

 

Description of courses.

 

CI  325  Problem of teaching (2 credit-hours)

The main objective of this course is to discuss some of the most common problems related to teaching and the best ways of dealing with these problems.  Special attention is given to problems of styles of instruction.

 

CI 250   Use of Computer in Teaching  (2 credit-hours)

The main objective of this course is to provide students with good background in computer use in teaching.  Special attention is given to some of the computer language which could be used in teaching some topics.

 

CI  330  Curricula and General Teaching Method

This course aims at developing the student's ability to perceive the curriculum as a means to achieve the objectives of Education.

 

CI  340  Methods of Teaching Religious Education

This course aims at:

1-

Enabling the student to realize the function of religion.

2-

Enabling the student to plan the curriculum of religious education

3-

Enabling the student to teach the different branches of religious secondary schools.

4-

Training the student to design lesson plans.

 

CI  341  Methods of Teaching Arabic Language

This course aims at:

1-

Enabling the student to understand the conception of language: its nature and characteristics.

2-

Enabling the student to understand the language arts and skills.

3-

Enabling the student to teach the language arts and skills in the different educational stages.

 

CI  342   Methods of Instruction in English  (2 credit-hours)

This course deals with the methods of teaching, pronunciation, grammar vocabulary, reading and writing.  It also gives a brief idea about language tests and about using aids in language teaching.

 

CI 343  Methods of Teaching Psychology  (2 credit-hours)

The main objectives of this course are: 1. To acquaint the student with the general Teaching  Methods (discussion, lecture, and role play) and producing lesson plans foe each method.  2. Critical Review of the high school text book.  3. Class room observation.  4. An overview of Teachers' Academic, Professional, social and Psychological Situations.

 

CI  344  Methods of Teaching History.  (2 credit-hours)

Objectives of teaching history, use of discovery and problem-solving in teaching, use of instructional media; lesson preparation, evaluation in teaching history.

CI  345   Methods of Teaching Geography  (2 credit-hours)

Objectives of teaching geography;  use of inquiry and problem-solving in teaching; use of instructional media, lesson preparation, evaluation in teaching geography.

 

CI  346     Methods of Teaching Art Education (2 credit-hours)

This course contributes to professional development of art education students to teach art education in intermediate schools.

Contents of  the Course:

1.   Objectives of art education.

2.   Curriculum of art education in intermediate schools.

3.   Setting an instructional situation in art education.

4.   Preparing  a plan for teaching art education.

5.   Preparing a lesson of art education

6.   Art exhibitions and their educational role.

 

CI  347  Methods of Physical Education  (2 credit-hours)

This course aims to introduce the student to the nature of curriculum development in physical education; its goals, contents, methods of motoring learning, organization and evaluation in the teaching process.

 

CI  350   Methods of Teaching Chemistry  (2 credit-hours)

This is a  theoretical foundation curse for practical experience in teaching science in general and teaching chemistry in particular.  Attention is directed to: 1. Science nature and its relationship to technology and society with an idea about the historical developments in science, with emphasis  on Islamic contributions.  2. Objectives of teaching Chemistry and  its applications and relation to other sciences.  3. Different methods, approaches, and medias in teaching chemistry with the stress in using various techniques.  4.  The  teacher role in choosing and using various medias and activities for better educational process.  5.  Characters and role of chemistry teacher in school and in society.  6.  Secondary schools student characters and behaviours with attention to the related learning and educational theories.  7.  Preparation of daily lesson plans and units of study with emphasis on micro-teaching and 8.  Aims and methods of evaluation in teaching Chemistry.

 

CI  351   Methods of Teaching Physics  (2 credit-hours)

CI  352   Methods of Teaching Biology  (2 credit-hours)

Characters and role of biology teacher in school and in society.  6.  Secondary school student characters of behaviors with attention to the related learning and educational theories.  7.  Preparation of daily lesson plans and units of study with emphasis in micro-teaching  and 8.  Aims and methods of evaluation in teaching biology.

 

CI  353  Methods of Teaching Mathematics  (2 credit-hours)

The basis for and significant elements of mathematics education in the schools.  Trends, desirable practices and basic principles in the selection and use of instructional techniques and materials.

 

CI  355  Teaching Methods by the Computer

The contents of the course:

a)

The objectives of teaching the computer courses in general education stages.

b)

The psychological and the educational foundations for teaching computer.

c)

The instructional foundations for teaching the computer.

d)

Using the instructional media.

e)

Planning the lessons (Theoretical and  Practical lessons)

f)

Evaluating the students' performance.

g)

The characteristics of the computer teacher.

 

CI 360 Evaluation and Classification of the Instructional Pro- grammes.

Contents of the course:

a-

The advantages of teaching by computer.

b-

The objectives of teaching by computer.

c-

The results of research and studies in the area of teaching by computer.

d-

The problems of teaching by computer.

e-

The characteristics of the effective instructional computer programme.

f-

The criteria for selecting the instructional computer programme.

g-

Classification of the instructional computer programme.

h-

Designing a model for evaluating the computer instructional programme.

i-

The realistic conditions of the prepared programmes.

j-

Integrating the prepared programmes into the existing curricula.

 

CI 460 Student Teaching in Teaching Religious Education  (12 credit-hours) 

The purpose of this course is to provide the student-teachers with ample opportunities to put into practice and develop under careful supervision the teaching skills and abilities discussed in CI 340.

 

CI 461  Student Teaching  in Teaching Arabic Language  (12 credit-hours)

The purpose of this course is to provide the student-teacher with ample opportunities to put into practice and develop under careful supervision the teaching skills and abilities discussed in CI 341.

CI  462  Practical Experience in Teaching English. (12 Credit-hours)

This course aims at training students to teach English in intermediate schools.  The students spend a whole semester, practicing actual teaching under the guidance of the college.

 

CI  463   Student Teaching in Teaching Psychology  (12 credit-hours)

This course attempts to give the student some experience in the use of the methods that he learned in CI 343.  The following are the main procedures: a. A seminar in how to prepare and execute a lesson plan.  b.  Classroom observation.  c.  The student will gradually  be given class room responsibility.

 

CI  464 Student Teaching in Teaching History (12 credit-hours)

1.

Orientation of student-teacher in college and training schools so as to undertake his assignment in teaching practice.

2.

Training of student-teacher to apply the teaching skills pertaining to history.

3.

Training of student-teacher in class-management and control.

4.

Training of student-teacher to participate in the various school activities, both social and cultural.

5.

Training of student-teacher to assume the responsibilities that are required by the daily life in school.

 

CI 465      Student Teaching in Teaching Geography  (12 credit-hours)

Observation and teaching under the direction of the college of Education.  Students will be provided with opportunities to assume responsibility for learning activities in a school in the field of geography.

 

CI 466 Student Teaching in Teaching Art Education  (12 credit-hours)

Observation and teaching under the direction of the College of Education.  Students will be provided with opportunities to assume responsibility for learning activities in a school in the field  of  art.

 

CI  467 Student Teaching in Teaching Physical Education (12 credit-hours)

This internship program aims at training the student to teach and participate in the school physical education program, games, out door sports and general activities.  The student spend a whole semester practing actual teaching under the guidance of the college.

 

CI  470 Student Teaching in Teaching Chemistry  (12 credit-hours)

This internship program is aimed for putting into practice what the student have had learned through his college schooling.  The prospective chemistry teacher spend a whole semester in a secondary school practicing and assuming responsibility of actual teaching under the supervision of the college.  He also attends a group siminar per week at the Colleges of Education to discuss  any problem they may encounter during their practice.  As part of this internship the prospective teacher is also responsible for related non-teaching activities and administrational

work within the school.

 

CI  471 Student Teaching in Teaching Physics  (12 credit-hours)

This internship program is aimed for putting into practice what the student have had learned through his college schooling.  The prospective   biology teacher spends a whole semester in a secondary school practicing and assuming responsibility of actual teaching under the supervision of the college.  He also attends a group seminar  per week at the College of Education to discuss any problem they may encounter during their practice.  As part of this internship the prospective teacher is also responsible for related non-teaching activities and administrational work within the school.

 

CI  473 Student Teaching in Teaching Mathematics (12 credit-hours)

The main objective of this course is to give students the opportunity to practice theories of learning at the secondary or intermediate levels. It includes teaching mathematics under the guidance of a university staff member.
