 Graduate Studies Program


The graduate studies in the Civil Engineering Department started with M.Sc. program in 1401H (1981).  The Ph.D. program in Civil Engineering started in 1420H (2000) after the Department’s M.Sc. program was successfully established. 

MASTER PROGRAM

Aims of The MSc Program
1) To satisfy the increasing need for enhancing skills of civil engineers.
2) To allow B.Sc. degree holders to pursue areas of interest and develop their capabilities by acquiring advanced knowledge and techniques.
3) To produce graduates who are able to conduct scientific research independently.
4) To explore ways of improving the practice of civil engineering profession in the K.S.A.
5) To activate the scientific research and enhance the cooperation between the university and private and governmental sectors.

Admission For MSc Program
The applicant must have a bachelor degree in Civil Engineering (Applicants with B.Sc. in other fields of engineering may be accepted with some conditions) with an average grade of ‘very good’ (B).  Applicants with (C) grade may also be accepted with some limitations and after due approval of the Department.

MSc Degree Requirements
1) Completing 24 credit hours of coursework from the approved graduate courses as follows:
a.  9 credit hours (or 3 courses) of common courses.
b.  15 credit hours (5 courses) of specialized Civil engineering courses chosen from one of the areas of specializations mentioned above.
2) Satisfactory completion of the MSc thesis.

Applicants must submit the following:
1)             Application form (obtained from Deanship of Graduate Studies).
2)             Certified transcript of academic record(s).
3)             Two letters of recommendation.
4)             A written permission from the applicant’s employer.

PhD PROGRAM

Aims of The PhD Program
1.To broaden the knowledge of graduate students and enhance their scientific and academic performance. 
2.To meet the needs of national universities and research and development centers for highly qualified faculty members and specialists in Civil Engineering who are capable of effective contributions to complex scientific and technical projects.

Admission For PhD Program
1.The applicant must have a Master degree in Civil Engineering from King Saud University or its equivalent with a (B) grade or “Very Good” at least. 
2. The candidate must obtain a score of at least 450 points in the TOEFL English language examination.

PhD Degree Requirements
1.Completing 18 credit hours of course work from the approved graduate courses.
2.Passing the Ph.D. qualifying comprehensive exam.
3.Satisfactory completion of two years Ph.D. dissertation.
