A- STUDENTS' PROJECTS
1- Field Training Programs:
These programs are designed to provide students with first hand practical training on daily operations in the field. Each student spends 100 hours of training, extended over a period of two months, in a specialized animal production farm or other related establishments. The training is conducted under direct supervision of a faculty member of the Department. Ongoing training programs include:
(i) Training program (Summer of 1428-1429 H) conducted at "ARASCO" Animal Feed Manufacturing Plant in Riyadh and including the following aspects: Biosecurity in poultry farms; broiler hatchery systems, feeds and feeding programs, chick preparation and delivery; housing and health care; feed analysis (at IDAC laboratories); poultry slaughterhouses and byproducts (e.g., fertilizers and feed ingredients); transportation of live poultry; processing, transportation and storage of poultry products; marketing.
(ii) Training program (Summer of 1427-1428 H) conducted at Al-Mara'i Dairy farm near Harad, and covering all aspects of dairy production including: nutrition; health care; calf management; reproduction and artificial insemination; barns; milking parlors; laboratory, quality control and general management.
(iii) Training program at Al-Safi Dairy Company, including the following:
(a) Reproduction and Veterinary Section: students are trained on assisting at birthing and handling newborn calves; collostrum feeding and nutrition, dairy herd vaccination and health care. They are also acquainted with health and reproductive records and interim reports.
(b) Calf Section: students are trained on calf feeding using milk replacers, and other feeding systems, weaning, de-horning; individual and group housing and record keeping.
(c) Barns Section: students are acquainted with criteria used in grouping and re-distribution of dairy animals according to age, production and reproductive status, body scoring etc. They are also trained on heat observation, artificial insemination and pregnancy diagnosis.
(d) Milking Section: students learn various milking procedures including milking order and timing; milking techniques; clean milk production, hygiene and disinfection of milking parlors, cooling and storage of milk and periodic monitoring of production.
(e) Nutrition Section: students are trained on formulation of complete diets; mixing feed ingredients; feed additives; feeding systems; and storage.
(f) Computer Section: Students review, enter and analyze incoming information, especially with respect to feeding programs.
(iv) Training program on Najdi sheep production at NADEC (Summer 1427-1428 H.)
(v) Training program on production and rearing of calves at the Arab Company for Development of Animal Resources.
(vi) Training program on chicken and egg production at Al Wadi Poultry Company.
2- Students Research Projects:
The course entitled "Research and Discussions" is designed to train students on research methodology and presentation of results. The students are also allowed to participate in on-going research projects, such as:
a) Effect of breed, age and storage duration on fertility and hatchability of broiler parents. Supervisor: Professor A. Al-Sobayel.
b) Effect of seasonal variation on some physiological responses in Reem gazelles. Supervisor: Professor A. Al-Haidari.
c) Effect of light during incubation of chicken and turkey eggs on embryo growth, hatchability criteria and performance of hatched chickens.
d) Effect of feeding program on performance of Najdi lambs.
e) Serological Prevalence of Q fever in Reem and Idmi gazelles. Supervisor: Professor Mansour F. Hussein.
3- Special Studies:
Students select and critically review a topic in poultry or animal production. During the current academic year, several topics were reviewed and presented by students, namely: Conventional and non-conventional animal feeds; the place of hormones and antibiotics in animal production; modern aspects of camel herding; diseases communicable between man and animals; reproduction and artificial insemination in camels; feeds and feeding of ruminants and poultry feeding.
