Requirement for admission to the course:
English 051 course registers students who have enrolled for the Master’s Program in any one of the following four Departments in the College of Administrative Sciences:
● Health and Hospital Administration
● Accounting
● Political Science
● Economics
Course Objectives:
It is an advanced English language course, the purpose of which is to improve the students’ language skills at the graduate level. The skills of Reading and Writing involve working with linguistic structures, which consist of words arranged to convey a specific message. Students are encouraged to use correct grammatical structures and develop the basic skills of transforming the written material into clear and correct mental images. The rationale for teaching this course is to prepare students in such a way that they are able to
· Read and understand passages with complex sentence structures and display a good command of working vocabulary.
· Write passages without any grammatical flaws and construct sentences, which communicate their thoughts precisely, cogently and accurately.
Course Content:
The course contents are based on the areas of reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary. The reading process involves
● Reading and understanding genuine passages
● Assimilation and the skimming and scanning of ideas
Teaching of vocabulary includes
● word formation
● presenting new words and expressions to be brought into everyday use
● awareness of collocations and using dictionary
Grammar and writing are compatible subjects and they focus on
● Verb-tense and Subject-verb consistencies
● Clauses, Conjunctions, sentence patterns and modifiers
● Punctuation
● Paragraph writing
Examinations:
Placement Test:
● It is given at the beginning of each term at the time of enrolment for the course.
● It contains a course-oriented TOEFL format.
● The Total Marks for this test is 100.
In-term Tests:
● These are course-oriented tests.
● The course carries two In-term tests with 25 marks each.
Final Examination:
● 50 marks are allotted for the Final Examination.
● The Pass Mark is 70 out of 100 marks including the in-terms and the final.

The English 055 course is proposed for students who register for the Master’s Program in the College of Agriculture.
Course Objectives:
The objective of the course is to enable the graduate students, in the College of Agriculture, to use English accurately and fluently, and to communicate effectively with ease in both social and academic situations through a balanced core of activities.
The course also aims to promote confidence in the students in order to extend their learning beyond the classroom and to facilitate the use of English language in periodicals and other material in the field of their specialization. The contents of all the four skills of language are selected with a view to meeting the needs and interests of the students.
Course Content:

The recommended books constitute the main material but they are also supplemented by a variety of extra material, which is developed or selected from other sources depending on the various needs of different students.
