Instruction in a foreign language can have a direct effect on the development of cognitive processes.  A language expands one’s range of thinking.

In a multi-lingual world, a modern language has enormous benefits for students in primary or secondary schools regardless of their age or their aptitude, their starting or their finishing point, and including those with special needs.  The benefit arises from students’ ability to access and interact with real people who speak and use other languages, and engage with relevant, interesting, and up-to-date information.
