Summary of Course Contents
1. Theoretical part composed of:
a) Lectures as detailed in the Course Outline are given over a period of
12 weeks in which the students are rotating in ORL and Ophthalmology
3 days per week.
b) Tutorials as detailed in the Tutorial Program are held in two groups
on alternate weeks over the rotation.
2. Practical: The students are allocated to ENT 3 days a week for 6/52
period in which they will be distributed in sub-groups to attend the
following schedule:
a) Clinics
To see the different presentations of variety of diseases in
the field of ENT,conduct history taking and examinations.
They will observe minor procedures and see post-operative
patients.
b) Rounds and bedside teaching.
c) Operative sessions to see common surgical procedures,
and speciar instruments used in this surgical field.
d) Audiology
They will attend and discuss various audiological and
vestibular tests used To evaluate hearing or balance
disorders.
e) Speech therapy sessions
To see different speech, language and voice problems,
their evaluation and management
Course Objectives
1. To expose students to a practical, realistic and representative
cross-section of ear, nose and throat and head and neck
problems in a comprehensive form.
2. To teach practical and theoretical aspects of the basic principles
of the specialty.
3. To enable the students to achieve a realistic working knowledge
in the specialty, they should be able to appreciate and effectively
handle the ear,nose and throat and head and neck problems of
importance; those which are common conditions or those that
are of serious consequences and call for appropriate referral
within the field of otolaryngology.
4. Finally, the curriculum in otohinolaryngology should create an
interest and stimulate the students for further postgraduate
studies in this particular specialty.
Course Outline
(a) Theoretical
1. Ear
· Anatomy, physiology and embryology of the ear.
· Diseases of the external ear (Otitis externa, otomycosis,
and eczema, wax, and foreign body, congenital anomalies),
acute otitis media.
· Chronic otitis media: Otitis media with effusion, types of
chronic supportive otitis media, cholesteatoma, atelectasis
and adhesive otitis media, management of C.S.O.M.
· Complications of otitis media: Intratemporal (Mastoiditis,
Labyrnthitis,Facial. Nerve paralysis, sigmoid sinus
thrombosis, petrositis);intracranial (epidural abscess,
meningitis, subdural abscess, brain abscess,
otitis hydrocephalus).
· Vertigo: Definition, balance disorders, types,
investigation,Meniere’s diseases, B.P.V., etc.)
· Deafness, types, SNHL, causes, investigations,
management, hearing aids, Cochlear Implant,
Tinnitus evaluation and management.
2. Nose + Sinuses
· Anatomy and physiology of the nose and para nasal sinuses,
investigations, septal and vestibule diseases, choanal atresia.
· Rhinitis (allergic and non-allergic), infection (chronic & acute),
expistaxis and its management.
· Sinusitis: Acute and chronic, types, complications of sinusitis.
3. Throat
· Anatomy and Physiology: Adenoids, acute infections (acute tonsillitis,
diphtgheria, infectious mononucleosis, aucte non-specific
pharyngitis, scarlet fever, monoliesis).
· Complications of tonsillitis (systemic and local), quinsy,
retropharyngeal abscess (acute & chronic),
parapharyngeal abscess, Ludwigs angina.
· Chronic tonsillitis, chronic pharyngitis.
· Indications and contra-indications of tonsillectomy and
adeniodectomy.
4. Larynx
· Anatomy and physiology, inflammatory disorders, voice problems,
tumour, etc.
· Headache: Facial pain, neuralgies in head and neck, migraine,
singogernic headache, referred pain.
· Salivary glands, anatomy and physiology of major and minor
salivary glands,investigations, inflammatory diseases, sialolethiasis
, tumours and lines of management.
· Neck mass: Lymphatic drainage of head & neck, neck swelling,
congenital inflammatory, neoplastic, pan endoscopy and general
lines of management of a neck swelling.
· Diseases of the oesophagus and tracheobronchial tree,
dysphagia, causes, evaluation and management, pouches,
Ca oesophagus.
(b) Tutorial
1. Orientation, history taking, examination, role of ORL in GP.
2. Upper airway obstruction and its management, oropharyngeal
airway,intubation, cricothyrotomy, tracheostomy, bronchoscopy.
3. Auditory investigation, vestibular investigations.
4. Head and neck trauma, frontal fractures, nasal fracture, mid-facial
fractures, jaw fractures, ear trauma, petrous fractures, laryngeal
trauma, foreign body in upper aerodigestive tract etc.
5. Common ORL tumours (Nasopharyngeal Ca, angiofibroma,
Squamous cell Ca of pharynx, oral cavity and larynx, laryngeal
papillomata, glomus tumours,other rare head and neck tumours).
6. Speech and phoniatrics (speech and language disorders, phoniatric
probleme and their therapy.
7. Radiology of head and neck.
Distribution of marks
1. Continuous assessment 40% in the form of MCQs.
2. Final examination including practical examination: 60% in the
form of OSCE.
