Postgraduate Program in Family Medicine

 

Introduction:

As the great need for well trained family physicians in the Saudi Community, the Department of Family & Community Medicine provides a four year program of structured training in Family Medicine. This is a recognized training program by Saudi Council for Health Specialties. It aims to train and graduate competent, safe, skilled and knowledgeable specialist in Family Medicine, capable of functioning and participating in provision of health care at PHC level independently and suppose to be leader of PHC team in the community. Training involves theoretical education, clinical experience and learning different
skills and attitudes which are required for the practice of Family Medicine in the community
. 

Objective:

The objectives of the Saudi Board of Family Medicine are to graduates a competence family physician who should:

a)    Adequately and appropriately diagnose, manage and treat common problems which are faced in the primary health care levels.

b)    Demonstrate the appropriate attitude of a caring physician; dedicated to developing good relationship with patients, families, and the community, meeting their needs and recognizing their expectations.

c)     Provide effective comprehensive and continuing health care for individuals' families and the community through the development of excellent problem solving skills.

d)    Apply acceptable principles and practices related to health service planning, organization, administration, research, and quality assurance (Q.A.) at the level of the primary health care delivery system.

e)    Through a system of referral/or consultation, serve as a point of entry into the secondary / or tertiary health care system.

f)     Determine the disease patterns of the community and subsequently implement and evaluate the most cost-effective anticipatory care programs (prevention and/or health education).

g)    Promote the autonomy of the individual, the Family and the Community by providing continuous health education aimed at improving health status at these levels.

h)    Recognize the social, cultural and psychological factors which influence health and disease and apply principles of medical ethics.

 

Admission requirements:

To be accepted in the program the candidate has to fulfill the following requirements:

a)    A medical degree i.e. MBBS or it’s equalant from a recognized university.

b)    Successfully completions of the rotational interesting.

c)     Passing an admission examination and interview.

d)    Provision of two recommendation letters from consultants confirming the capability of the candidate for training in the field of Family Medicine.

e)    Provision of a letter from the sponsoring organization approving that the candidate can join full time training for the whole period of the program for four years.

f)     Registration as trainee at the Saudi Council for Health Specialty.

Structure of the training program:

This is a four years program of structured training in Family Medicine. The trainee starts with first 4 months intensive course in Family Medicine which focused on the concept and elements of PHC, health care system in Saudi Arabia and role of Family Medicine in promoting the health of the people. This course will also focus on common principles such as
communication, consultation with patients and ethical issues at any professional setting. Then the candidates spends their remaining first two years rotating in different major specialties including medicine, surgery
, pediatrics, OB/GYN, and emergency.

In the third year, the residents spend 3 month in a course of Community Medicine, where they learn the principles of epidemiology, statistics and plan their research project which should be completed and submitted before entering the final examination of the board. 

The remaining 3rd year will be spending in remaining specialties like psychiatry, dermatology, ophthalmology, and ENT. 

The final 4th year, the trainee will spend whole year in the department of Family Medicine taking care and full responsibilities of the patients as outpatients and at recognized PHC centers.

Half-Day Release Course:

This is an ongoing program where the trainees participate in a half day activity per week. Over the whole four years. The trainees are responsible for these activities under
the supervision of their assigned tutors
 

Evaluation and Examinations:

Each trainee will have three types of examinations:

a)    Promotion examination which will be conducted at the end of each academic year.

b)    First part examination, which will be conducted at the end of second academic year.

c)     Final examination which will be conducted at the end of 4th year and when
a candidate has fulfilled the all requirement of the Board.
