Programmes of the Department:
The most important objectives of the Department are to improve the general health status of pregnant women by providing adequate antenatal and post natal care, diagnose and treat women with gynaecological problems, and participate in the academic and clinical training of both under graduate and post graduates.
Under Graduate Programme:
Course 481 is given to medical students in their 4th year of the medical school. 11 hours of teaching, tutorials, and clinical exposure are given weekly. There are three of these cycles annually, two cycles for males and the third cycle for female students.
The course aims to impart in the students basic knowledge in the field of obstetrics & gynaecology. At the end of the course it is hoped they will be able to diagnosed and manage common obstetrical and gynaecological problems.
Post Graduate Courses:
The Department provides a 4 years post graduate training programme leading to the award of the Saudi/ Arab Board fellowship as well as the fulfillment of the requirements for the membership of the royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologist in the U.K.
During this programme, the residents, as these students are known, follow a set of instructions as prescribed by the syllabuses of these professional bodies. At the end of each year, examinations are conducted to determine the suitability of such residents for promotion to the next level of training.
In their 3rd year, residents are expected to have a rotation outside the department in other related specialties such as neonatal intensive care, anesthesia, pathology and others.
The whole training programme involves attendance of lectures, workshops gynaecological surgical procedures, obstetric procedures, symposia all of which are designed to give the residents a thorough understanding of the art and practice of obstetrics and gynaecology.
