Introduction:
The past few years has witnessed effective initiatives introduced by the government of Saudi Arabia. These initiatives aimed at developing the health services and creating the human resources to work in the health care sector. To meet these aims, the government focused its efforts on increasing the number of the educational and health training institutions by improving the ability of the medical and applied medical colleges, community health colleges, and other colleges to provide opportunity for more students through out the Kingdom. They also increased the variety of educational programs that lead to different degrees and are suitable for both technical and specialized jobs.
The strategy of human work force development in the health sector has targeted the national resources in all current health majors. Despite all these efforts, the current ratio of Saudis among the workers in the health sector is less than the anticipated ratio, which means that more efforts are needed to achieve Saudization. The Ministry of Health statistics in 1421/1422 H show that the total of nurses, "the largest sector in the human health resources", is 67,421. The ratio of the Saudi nurses is about 20% and most of them are associate diploma holders.

In 1407/1408 H., a Master of Science program in Nursing was established with six nursing majors. A number of students have graduated and are now occupying leading nursing positions throughout the Kingdom.
Following the experience gained by the Department of Nursing in preparing students over the years, and appreciating the importance of nursing science as one of the vital and most needed majors in the provision of health services, the Department of Nursing was converted to an independent college by Royal Order in 1425 H.
