Welcome to the College of Languages and Translation’s 3rd Annual Symposium.
On behalf of our family at the College of Languages and Translation, and on behalf of our girls, the student body at COLT, I would like to welcome all our guests here today to attend what I hope will be an interesting and rewarding five days.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Princess Adelah for honouring us with her presence, knowing that the day will be long and has started early. I hope that the kindness she has shown by being with us here today will prove to be well-founded and that our goals are worth it.
A thank you goes to all our participants: without them our goals are futile. They are the catalyst that will lead us to our objectives. We appreciate the time they have given us by being part of our symposium and exhibition as they are the representatives of our society and community.
Another thank you goes to King Saud University’s administration represented by Dr. AlJazi Al-Shubaiki, Dean of the Centre for University Studies for Girls, and by Dr. Abdullah Al-Othman, KSU’s Rector, who have facilitated our endeavours with their support.
Endless encouragement was also given to us by COLT’s Dean, Dr.Saad Al-Hashash, Vice-Dean, Dr. Ibraheem Al-Qarni and Head of Department, Dr. Mohammed Al-Hadlaq, to whom we send our gratitude as well as to the rest of our colleagues in the male section.
A pre-final thank you must be sent to the people at National Media who have made all this possible and who have shown professionalism and patience throughout the months we have worked together on this project.
Finally, a big thank you must go to COLT’s dedicated staff members, whose hard work is incessant and without whom COLT would not exist. Their participation in our symposium is heart-warming.
As for our students, all I can say is that they are inspirational, and a fine example is represented here today by all those who are participating in the different committees, showing loyalty and good will to their College. We are all very proud of you.
The purpose of our symposium is many-fold and every year the themes differ, but the focal point each year is the same: the college’s relationship with the community, the way our graduates are capable of serving it and how, in return, the community can offer the necessary openings to provide top graduates with opportunities to serve in a valuable and positive manner.
This year’s theme is “Making a Difference” and our focus is on promoting awareness in our student population on the need for volunteer work, on giving without expecting anything in return and walking that extra mile to make a difference.
Too often we hear: “Why should I do this?” or “What’s in it for me?” or even “Am I going to get paid for this?” Too often the selfish desire of putting our comfort before all else takes precedence over the selfless act of giving. And although there are people who sacrifice their time for causes that go beyond the immediate self, they are but a minority, a minority that understands that the self-satisfaction that comes with the gift of giving is a form of success in itself.
Giving takes on various forms and it doesn’t always have to focus on the financial or the materialistic. And it doesn’t have to take on the form of grandiose acts. An hour or two with needy children, speaking to the elderly, lending a helping hand to cancerous patients or people with special needs are but a few of the ways we can participate in our community. Giving can also be done on a day-to-day basis, by doing that little bit extra in the “unit” you belong to. The list is endless and the rewards are numerous.
Keeping this in mind, we have invited different charitable organizations to participate in our symposium and introduce our students to the challenging work they carry out, to talk about what their organizations represent, how they began and what their goals are. We hope that this will encourage and motivate our students to contribute to our society with their time and effort.
We also hope that this will create a constructive environment for employers to meet potential employees, young women who have been trained in translation and who will prove to be productive and beneficial to any organisation by putting their skills to the best use possible, whether by interpreting in conferences or translating relevant material --- such as books, pamphlets, leaflets, websites etc. And here I must add that Princess Adelah has given our students the opportunity to translate Sanad’s electronic site into English and French, and we shall be sending the results to her for approval.
At the same time, we have organised workshops covering a variety of themes, ranging from teacher training to self-development to setting up your site on the web. The Saudi British Bank, SABB, will also be giving a workshop on everything from how to write a CV to how to succeed in an interview and handle problematic situations. We have also allocated time to our students so that they can vocalise on what they believe to be of importance, introducing them to public speaking and the necessity to overcome fear and embarrassment. It’s one of the ways we see our students bonding with their college and their community and at the same time developing intra-personal skills that will be the base on which they build on in the future.
A series of lectures have also been arranged and this year our speakers are not only from the College of Languages and Translation but also from the Arabic Department and the Political Sciences Department at King Saud University as well as other institutions such as from the English Department at Prince Sultan University and the Institute of Vocational Training.
Throughout the week, there shall be an accompanying exhibition in the adjacent halls to the auditorium in which the main activities shall be situated. Various companies shall be represented and, where goods can be sold as part of their involvement, selling shall take place. Participating charities shall also have booths where they can display their information and contact details as well as have a sign-up sheet/book for the students to sign in for future employment and/or voluntary work.
We believe that our community is in desperate need of awareness and this is a humble attempt at producing a small part of it. Our goal is to stir a minority into activity, having responded to the messages conveyed throughout the five days of our symposium. We also believe that the community, the charities and various employers should take on a more active role in finding potential candidates by employing COLT graduates and cooperating on a long-term basis with the College of Languages and Translation, hopefully setting up ventures and projects between the two entities.

بداية، نيابةً عن أسرة كلية اللغات و الترجمة و بناتها، و أصالة عن نفسي، أرحب بحفلنا الكريم في هذا اللقاء الذي أتمنى أن يعود عليكم بالمتعة و الفائدة.
كما أود أن أغتنم هذه الفرصة لأعبر عن شكرنا لصاحبة السمو الملكي الأميرة / عادلة بنت عبد الله بن عبد العزيز آل سعود و امتناننا لها لتشريفها لقائنا هذا، فما حضورها و افتتاحها له إلا تأكيدا لأهمية أهدافه التي نسعى لتحقيقها.
و لا ننسى أن نقدم شكرنا للجهات المشاركة، فبهم و معهم تتحقق أهدافنا. نقدر لهم وقتهم و جهدهم و مشاركتهم في اللقاء و المعرض المصاحب له كممثلين للمجتمع.
وشكرنا موصولا أيضاً لإدارة جامعة الملك سعود، متمثلةً في سعادة الدكتور / مدير الجامعة د. عبد الله العثمان، و سعادة الدكتورة / عميدة مركز الدراسات الجامعية للبنات د. الجازي الشبيكي لدعمهم و تشجيعهم الذي ينبع من وعيهم بأهمية مثل هذه الفعاليات و بعد نظرهم بما يتحقق من فائدة للمجتمع حاضرا و مستقبلا.
كما نشكر الدعم المتواصل من سعادة الدكتور / عميد كلية اللغات و الترجمة د. سعد الحشاش, و سعادة الدكتور / وكيل كلية اللغات و الترجمة للتطوير و الجودة د. إبراهيم القرني، و سعادة الدكتور / رئيس قسم اللغات الأوروبية و الترجمة د. محمد الهدلق، و الشكر موصول كذلك لباقي الزملاء في قسم الطلاب.
كما و نقدم شكرنا الخاص لفريق عمل شركة الوسائل الوطنية للمناسبات، الذين لم يألوا جهداً لإنجاح هذا الحدث. فلولا صبرهم و احترافهم و مهنيتهم لما تمكنا من إخراج هذا اللقاء بالشكل الذي يليق باسم الكلية و المركز و الجامعة.
و لن ننسى تقديم الشكر لكافة منسوبات كلية اللغات و الترجمة لجهودهم الدؤوبة، فهم بنية الكلية و أساسها. و بمشاركتهم يكتمل اللقاء.
أولاً و أخيراً، بناتنا الطالبات اللاتي كن و مازلن مصدر إلهامنا، و اللاتي نفتخر بولائهن لكليتهن، بيتهن الثاني، و انتمائهن لها, و هو إحساس تترجمه لنا مشاركتهن في لجان اللقاء المختلفة.
للقائنا أهدافاً عدة، و محاور تتنوع في كل عام نعقده فيه، إلا أنها جميعا جوهرها واحد، ألا و هو: علاقة كلية اللغات و الترجمة بالمجتمع, و السبل التي من خلالها توطد خريجاتنا هذه العلاقة بخدمة المجتمع و التعاون مع الجهات الخيرية و المنظمات المختلفة. و في المقابل، طرق استفادة هذه الجهات من الخدمات التي تقدمها خريجاتنا الجادات المتميزات.
أما هذا العام، فمحور لقائنا هو "كلية اللغات و الترجمة و خدمة الجامعة و المجتمع". و هدفنا الأساسي هو نشر الوعي بين الطالبات حول أهمية العمل التطوعي و العطاء بدون انتظار مقابل و التفاني في إنجاز العمل و الإخلاص له.
فكم من مرة سمعنا تساؤلات تتردد بين أفراد المجتمع: لماذا أقوم بهذا العمل؟ و ما الفائدة التي سأجنيها من وراءه؟ بل أننا نسمع من يقول: هل سيكون هناك مقابل مادي؟ و كثيراً ما تقع الأنانية و حب الذات عائقاً في طريق العطاء. و بالرغم من وجود بعض الذين يضحون بوقتهم و جهدهم لمثل هذه الأهداف و الغايات النبيلة، إلا أنهم قلة، و لكنها تدرك أن العطاء و البذل و مساعدة الغير بدون انتظار مقابل هي النجاح بعينه الذي يمنح صاحبه إحساس بالرضى لا يشعر به إلا من يعطي.
و للعطاء أشكالا عدة لا تقتصر على العطاء مادي، و لا تقتصر على تلك الأعمال عظيمة. فهناك فرص عديدة نقدم من خلالها لمجتمع أعطانا الكثير، فنستطيع أن نرعى طفلا أو مسنا لساعة أو ساعتين من نهار، و يكننا أن تمد يد العون لمرضى السرطان أو ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة. فجميع هذه الأعمال تعزز التكافل الاجتاعي بين أبناء هذا الوطن، حتى و إن اقتصر عطاؤنا على القريبين منا، إلا أن فوائده تمتد لتطال الآخرين من خلال نشر عمل الخير و التطوع في المجتمع.
و من هذا المنطلق، وجهنا الدعوة لمنظمات و جمعيات خيرية مختلفة لمشاركتنا في اللقاء الأكاديمي الثالث لنعرف طالباتنا بها, و أسباب تأسيسها, و طبيعة أنشطتها, و الأهداف التي تسعى كل جهة لتحقيقها. و كان ذلك رغبة منَا في تشجيع الطالبات على العمل التطوعي و تحفيزهن لبذل الوقت و الجهد في خدمة المجتمع.
كما نـأمل أن نكون بلقائنا هذا قد خلقنا فرصا ليلتقي أصحاب الأعمال و جهات التوظيف المختلفة بطالباتنا اللاتي قد يشغلن عملا فيها، طالبات متخصصات في الترجمة سيثبتن، بمشيئة الله، كفائتهن و جدارتهن لأيما منظمة أو جمعية انضممن إليها سواء كان من خلال ترجمة الكتب أو المطويات أو الكتيبات أو المواقع الإلكترونية و غيرها. و هنا أود أن أغتنم هذه الفرصة لتقديم الشكر لصاحبة السمو الملكي الأميرة / عادلة بنت عبد الله بن عبد العزيز آل سعود على ثقتها بكلية اللغات و الترجمة، حيث عهدت لطلاب و طالبات الكلية بمسؤولية ترجمة الموقع الإلكتروني لجمعية سند الخيرية لرعاية الأطفال المرضى بالسرطان إلى اللغتين الإنجليزية و الفرنسية. و سنقدم لسموها نتاج أعمال الترجمة قريبا بإذن الله، و الذي بعد أن ينال موافقتها و استحسانها سيكون أول مشروع تعاون بين الكلية و المجتمع.
و إضافة إلى ذلك تتنوع فعاليات اللقاء بين محاضرات و ورش عمل تتناول مواضيع عدة منها على سبيل الذكر لا الحصر، تدريب المعلمين، و تطوير المهارات، و إنشاء المواقع الإلكترونية الشخصية. كما سينظم البنك السعودي البريطاني (ساب) ورشة عمل حول تطوير مهارات كتابة السيرة الذاتية و أسس إجراء المقابلات الشخصية الناجحة, و حتى استراتيجيات التعامل مع المواقف الصعبة في مجال العمل.
كما ستشارك طالبات الكلية من خلال تقديم بعض العروض للتعبير عن آرائهن حول بعض المواضيع التي تمس حياتهن، فهي بكل تأكيد فرصة لا تعوض تساعدهن في التدرب على مهارات الإلقاء. فنحن نعتبر هذا الحدث إحدى الطرق اللاتي يستطعن من خلالها التواصل مع الكلية و مع المجتمع ككل، فضلاً عن أنه يوفر لهن فرصة ذهبية لتطوير و صقل مهاراتهن للتواصل مع الذات و يزودهن بذخيرة تنفعهن عندما يلتحقن بمجال العمل بإذن الله.
و من أبرز الفعاليات في اللقاء الأكاديمي الثالث، مجموعة من المحاضرات و الندوات اللاتي تلقيها أستاذات كلية اللغات و الترجمة و طالباتها, بالإضافة إلى مشاركين و مشاركات من قسم اللغة العربية و قسم العلوم السياسية في جامعة الملك سعود، و غيرها من المؤسسات التعليمية كقسم اللغة الإنجليزية في جامعة الأمير سلطان و مؤسسة التعليم الفني و التدريب المهني.
و سيصاحب اللقاء معرضاً تشارك فيه العديد من الشركات و المنظمات و الجمعيات الخيرية التي ستعرف الطالبات و الزائرات و أعضاء هيئة التدريس بطبيعة أنشطتها و مجالاتها. و تستطيع الطالبات الانضمام إلى هذه الجمعيات إما كموظفات أو إن لم يتوفر ذلك كمتطوعات.
ختاماً، فإننا نعي تماما حاجة المجتمع للتوعية بمثل هذه الأمور الحيوية، و هذا الجهد المتواضع، متمثلاً في اللقاء الأكاديمي الثالث، ما هو إلا مساهمة نسعى من خلالها سد جزء من هذه الثغرة، و بذلك نكون عاملا مساهما في نشر ثقافة العمل التطوعي بين طالبات الجامعة و بناتها. فهدفنا تذكير حضورنا الكريم بالعمل التطوعي، لعل الذكرى تنفع المؤمنين. و كلنا أمل أن يلعب المجتمع و المنظمات و الجمعيات الخيرية و جهات التوظيف دورا فعالا في توظيف خريجات الكلية و التعاون المستمر مع كلية اللغات و الترجمة في مشاريع مشتركة مستقبلا.
