112 & 113 Reading course objectives:
The main aim of these courses is to teach Reading Skills, such as previewing and prediction, comprehension, finding the main idea, scanning, skimming, predicting, making inferences and using the context to understand the meaning of unfamiliar words.
Vocabulary:
New words are introduced in each lesson. The words are used through out the exercises in the lesson, and repeated several times in later lessons. There is also a context clues exercise that teaches some of the vocabulary in the unit. Each unit also provides a section on synonyms to build up the vocabulary of the student. Because the new words are used in several different sentences, students learn how to use them in various contexts. The vocabulary moves gradually from general English to scientific English.
Exercises:
There are a number of different exercises to go through in each unit, such as filling the blank with the new vocabulary, comprehension questions, scanning for details, skimming for main ideas, for topics and for pattern of organization. There are inference type questions as well as true/ false/ no information questions.
Word Study & Grammar:
There is a word study section at the end of each unit. It reinforces structural points such as verb forms, pronouns, articles, adjectives and phrasal verbs. Basic tense structure and prepositions are studied.
Discussions:
There is ample material for class discussion as well as verifying comprehension.
