Self Learning Programme

Why do we need self learning and what is self learning?

Self learning was created to get students to be more independent, hard working and able to solve problems. The primary role for self learning can be summarized as “helping students manufacture their own body of knowledge by allowing them to experience learning through task based activities.”

As mentioned earlier, self learning was a major problem last semester, and this was not due to anyone in particular. In fact Ali and Yahya worked extremely hard in making self learning a success. Based upon your feedback, self learning has been redesigned. What this means is that every student has to do an hour of self learning a week with his teacher in class.

For AM classes, this hour will be every Tuesday from 11.00-12.00 and for PM students, every Tuesday from 1.40-2.40. This will count towards the final grade of each student and is not to be confused with the general SL that carries no marks.

Every week teachers will be sent clearly outlined tasks to be completed by students. Fortnightly, teachers will fill out the Bi-Weekly Report and hand it in to the Self Learning Office on Saturday. This report lets us know what you have done in class and who was absent from self learning.

Self learning will start on Tuesday 16th March 2009.
