IT Self Learning program
INTRODUCTION TO IT SELF LEARNING:
· Self learning for IT is aimed towards inculcating technical proficiency among students.
· Self Learning activities are purely directed towards the implementation of technical skills by the students.
· Topics for self learning are decided so that students feel motivated towards learning and applying what they are introduced to in self learning classes.
· Each section of students is given an extra hour for self learning per week.
· Sections are divided in two levels: Basic and Advanced.
· For basic levels various topics for two weeks are scheduled after completion of which relevant competitions are organised among the students.
· For basic level the last two weeks of the semester will be dedicated towards making presentations by them.
· In advanced levels web designing using html and web hosting will be covered in the semester. After covering subtopics for each two weeks students are made to implement various tags and design sample web pages.
· Self learning carries total 10 marks-6 for attendance (0.5 for each class) and 4 for projects.
· Best performers from both the levels will be selected to present their projects on the IT self learning skills day.
GUIDELINES:
INSTRUCTOR GUIDLINES:
Ø Self learning will be set as an extra hour from academics on any working week day according to the available time slots in student’s time schedule.
Ø Due to availability of instructors academic instructor and self learning instructor may not be same.
Ø Each class will carry 0.5 marks for attendance.
STUDENT GUIDLINES:
Ø An extra hour is set for IT self learning.
Ø Your schedule for self learning is listed according to your section (batch number).
Ø You will have self learning with your specified learning teacher.
Ø You will be categorised in either basic or advanced level based on the feedback from your academic teacher.
Ø Students are required to maintain a soft copy record for various resources used by them and provided to them e.g.: various URLs, books, software’s etc.
Ø Students are required to bring their flash memories in their self learning class so as to take reference material to home for commencements of projects in the last 2 weeks of self learning classes.
Ø If you are in basic level your teacher will cover certain topics for every two weeks and at the end of two weeks you will have certain competitions based on the topics you learnt so far. In such competitions you will be graded accordingly by your teacher. In the last two weeks of self learning you will have to prepare presentations choosing any topic you covered so far.
Ø If you are in advanced level you will learn HTML and every week you will cover specified tags and techniques. In Last 20 minutes of each class you will have to implement all the tags you learn so far. In the last two weeks of self learning you have to come up with your websites as guided by your respective teachers. If required you will also be asked to collect some relevant data from the various departments of the university.
Ø You have to bring your flash memories to the class and keep a track of search material and back up you sample practice sessions for final projects.
Ø For attending each class you will be given marks equal to 0.5.you are expected to have 6 marks for attendance.
Ø Your project carries 4 marks.
Ø Both attendance and commencement of assigned projects carries marks.
MAIN TOPICS FOR BASIC AND ADVANCED LEVEL:
Ø For basic level:
§ There are 4 main topics covered in this semester:
1. Keyboard skills with an emphasis on typing skills.
2. Internet, search engines and e greetings.
3. E-commerce: emergence, applications advantages and disadvantages.
4. Online dictionary: ease and uses.
§ After completing each topic the instructor will grade the student’s learning process by carrying out activity based competitions among the students.
§ Depending on the nature of topic the instructor may organise students in groups or individuals.
§ In the last 2 weeks students will be designing presentations and blogs on the topics covered by them.
§ The 3 best projects will be presented on the IT self learning skills day.
Ø For advanced level:
§ Web designing using HTML is covered in this semester. Various tags covered
include:
1. 1st Week: Introduction to HTML, Software’s Used, HTML Tags & Attributes, Sample Program.
2. 2nd Week: Text Formatting, Font Size, Text Colour, Background Colour & Colour Codes
3. 3rd Week: Images – Inserting Images, Resizing Images, Image Alignment, Background Images.
4. 4th Week: Headings, Paragraphs, Line Break, Special Characters.
5. 5th Week: Special Effects – Marquee Text, Marquee Image, Blinking Text.
6. 6th Week: HTML Table – Table Border, Size, Background Colour& Image, Alignment.
7. 7th Week: HTML Table - Inner Table, Table Row & Column Span.
8. 8th Week: HTML Forms – Text, Button, Radio, Checkbox, Password, Text Area.
9. 9th Week: HTML Forms - Combo Box, Drop down List, Label, Submit & Reset.
10. 10th Week: Adding Sounds & Music to an HTML page.
11. 11th Week: HTML Links – Link within a single page & other pages, Link Colour, Using Image as a Link.
12. 12th Week: dedicated to practicing & preparing students to finalise their SL HTML Projects (websites).
§ At the end of each week the students will have to design sample web pages using all the tags covered in the self learning class.
§ From an hour the last 20 minutes will be exclusively for students to implement their new skills.
§ The students will have to work in a group.
§ Each group will be consisting of 6 students maximum and three minimum.
§ The instructor will maintain a progress report of each group after the students implement their skills.
§ Students will be kept well aware of their progress scale.
§ In designing students to a greater extant are free to exhibit their creativity.
§ According to the flair of students instructors will decide the categories of websites for different groups.
§ Small websites may be clubbed in to a bigger one.
§ If free web domain is available, students website will be displayed on trial basis
§ The last 2 weeks will be exclusively dedicated for completion of websites.
DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES AND PROJECTS
Activity Description for basic level:
· GROUP LEVEL: BASIC
NAME OF ACTIVITY: Keyboard skills
AIM OF ACTIVITY: Getting students well acquainted with using keyboard with an enhanced typing speed.
GOALS/EXPECTATIONS: By the end of this activity students will know various types of keys on the keyboard their usage and shortcuts. Students typing skills and speed will also groom.

· GROUP LEVEL: BASIC
NAME OF ACTIVITY: Browsing internet and e greetings
AIM OF ACTIVITY: Learning to Surf internet with efficient search tricks, creating email id and how to exchanging e greetings.
GOALS/EXPECTATIONS: By the end of this activity students will be able to navigate through internet efficiently. They will also know various steps to be followed for creating their email id’s, attaching files and filling web forms. They will also be introduced to e greetings. They will know many e greeting websites and for future will be motivated to create such effects using various softwares as per the advancement in softwares.

· GROUP LEVEL: BASIC
NAME OF ACTIVITY: E commerce: emergence advantages and disadvantages.
AIM OF ACTIVITY: To explore the new concepts of e banking, e shopping, and e booking for various means of transport.
GOALS/EXPECTATIONS: By the end of this topic students will be well aware of money transfers, exchanges, payments and transactions done electronically.

· GROUP LEVEL: BASIC
NAME OF ACTIVITY: Online dictionary-ease and uses
AIM OF ACTIVITY: The students will learn using various online dictionaries for finding English to English and English to Arabic meanings
GOALS/EXPECTATIONS: By the end students will be comfortable in using online dictionaries find various words meanings and learn accurate pronunciations using computer as a tool and internet as a resource.

NAME OF ACTIVITY: Preparing presentations
AIM OF ACTIVITY: Presenting of project.
GOALS/EXPECTATIONS: The students will finalise their presentations and get them ready for assessments.
MARKING RUBERIC: Projects carry 4 marks and each individual project carries 1 mark each and at the end each mark will be added

GOALS/EXPECTATIONS: The students will understand the building blocks of Html, how to write and run the code
